Key points
- §80D allows an individual / HUF a deduction for MEDICAL INSURANCE PREMIUM and related expenditure.
- SELF, SPOUSE & DEPENDENT CHILDREN: up to ₹25,000 (₹50,000 where the eldest person insured is aged 60 or above).
- PARENTS (whether dependent or not): an ADDITIONAL ₹25,000 (₹50,000 if a parent is 60+).
- Within each limit, PREVENTIVE HEALTH CHECK-UP up to ₹5,000 is allowed (and may be paid in cash).
- For VERY SENIOR CITIZENS (80+) with no insurance, actual MEDICAL EXPENDITURE qualifies within the ₹50,000 cap.
- The OVERALL maximum is ₹1,00,000 (both taxpayer and parents senior citizens).
- Premium (other than preventive check-up) must be paid by any mode OTHER THAN CASH.
- Available only under the OLD regime.
